George A. Selke, St. Cloud, Minnesota, served during World War II in the Civil Affairs Division of the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF) in Tedington, England, where he was responsible for the care of Secret and Top Secret documents and materials. His manuscript (handwritten, 6 pages; typed transcript, 2 pages), written in 1963, describes that service and the acquisition of the mimeographed directive (December 8, 1943) which details the plans of "Operation Overlord," the project Allied invasion of Europe. The latter is autographed by Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) was established in on Feb. 13, 1944 in London, England under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Following the invasion of Europe, SHAEF was moved to Versailles, France (Aug. 1944-May 1945), and later for Frankfurt, Germany. SHAEF was dissolved on July 14, 1945.
